NYPD: Deadly Shooting in Church Parking Lot Was Justified

Gilberto Blanco was shot once in the chest

New York City police say an officer appears to have acted within department guidelines when she killed a man who lunged at her with a wooden folding chair in a church parking lot.

Police say Gilberto Blanco was shot once in the chest.

The incident occurred Thursday outside the Coney Island Gospel Assembly in Brooklyn.

Officer Dawn Ortiz, who was assigned to a truancy center in the church, was told a man was trying to break into a car.

She and another officer said they approached the man and yelled twice for him to put down the chair. He got about a foot from Ortiz before she fired.

Police say a preliminary investigation showed she faced an imminent threat of serious physical injury or death.
