NJ Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

Family members say a Toms River, N.J. soldier killed in Afghanistan this week was eager to join the military despite their concerns for his safety. Army Cpl. James W. Harvey II died Monday in Afghanistan.

A 23-year-old soldier was killed earlier this week during a skirmish in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Sgt. James W. Harvey II, of Times River, died June 20 in Ghazni province of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Ky.

Harvey's remains were due to be returned to Toms River Wednesday.
