Driver Who Nearly Hit Officer Leads Police on Chase, Crashes Into River

Authorities say a driver who nearly struck a police officer during a traffic stop led police on a pursuit that ended when his car went into a river.

Linden police tell The Star-Ledger that 23-year-old Allen Johnson, of Union Township, was unresponsive when he was pulled from the partially submerged car early Sunday. But he was treated at a hospital and released later that day.

Authorities say Johnson was initially stopped for running a red light. When he was asked to exit the car, police say he drove off and nearly hit an officer.

The pursuit soon went into Cranford, where his car went into the Rahway River.

Johnson faces several counts, including eluding and aggravated assault. It wasn't known Monday if he has retained an attorney.
