Police say they’ve arrested a man who shot at officers as they checked on his broken down vehicle in New Jersey.

Readington Township police officers were out on patrol Tuesday night when they saw a car in the breakdown lane of Route 22 eastbound, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns said.

When the officers noticed a man in a field nearby, they asked him to return to the car. He fired at the officers moments later, Kearns said.

Police did not return fire and were eventually able to take the man into custody.

No one was injured or taken to a hospital.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene, with around a dozen officers in body armor patrolling the area as detectives investigated.

Kearns said an investigation is ongoing and that the man’s name has not been released.
