What to Know

  • Before it removed the bike, a journalist from Gothamist tried to ride it and found it completely immobile

Someone must have taken a ride in the river-- a Citi Bike was found Saturday covered in barnacles at a bike dock on 73rd Street and Riverside Drive.

“I raced over to the rack by my house, hopeful to grab the one Citi Bike that was there,” Ted Geoghegan said on Twitter. “It has literally just been fished out of the river. It is held together with rust and barnacles.”

The handles of the bike were covered in barnacles.

Citi Bike swiftly removed the bike from the dock on Sunday. The last time it was ridden was September 2017.

“Darn Barnacles!” Citi Bike said on Twitter. “We removed the bike from service and it won't be hitting the streets (or the Hudson) ever again.”

The bike was no longer rideable.

The Gothamist was able to intercept the barnacle bike before its removal. A Gothamist reporter tried — and failed — to ride it as the pedals and back wheel would not move.
