More Victims Emerge in Adoption Ponzi Scheme

More couples are emerging in several states saying they might have been victims of what a New York prosecutor is calling an adoption Ponzi scheme.

The arrest last week of 41-year-old attorney Brian Cohen on grand larceny and other charges has prompted 16 couples in New York, Georgia, Ohio and Texas to contact prosecutors.

Nassau County prosecutor Kathleen Rice on New York's Long Island said couples paid Cohen tens of thousands of dollars in adoption fees and were given bogus excuses why a baby was ultimately not available.

Couples received partial refunds from money he collected from other families seeking a child, Rice said.

Cohen has pleaded not guilty. A grand jury is considering additional charges.
