Man Injured in Incident on Tracks at New York Penn Station; Rush Hour Delays Building on LIRR

A man was critically injured when he fell on the tracks at Penn Station on Friday evening. The incident led to delays and cancellations on the LIRR. Andrew Siff reports.

A man was injured in an incident on the tracks at New York Penn Station Friday afternoon, immediately causing delays and cancellations ahead of rush hour.

The injured person was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, authorities said. Further details were not immediately available.

The Long Island Rail Road said on Twitter that at least five trains heading into Penn Station had already been cancelled, with more delayed on the Long Beach, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches. It cited only "police activity" for the interruptions.

Members of the FDNY and NYPD were seen at track 18 around 4 p.m. Yellow police tape was strung up on nearby columns.

Social media was full of outraged complaints from train riders, many of whom appeared not to know the reason for the delay, following weeks of service disruptions at the station.
