Lights Out! NYC Set to Darken Landmarks for Earth Hour

The United Nations headquarters is among landmarks set to shut off their lights for an hour to signal the need for global support for a new climate treaty.
    
The U.N. building is one of hundreds in New York City and around the world going dark Saturday as part of an international "lights out'' action to highlight climate change. Sydney was the first major city to observe the rolling global blackout, known as Earth Hour.
    
Nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries plan to join in the World Wildlife Fund-sponsored event. In New York, it will darken Times Square billboards, the Chrysler and Empire State buildings and the decorative "necklaces'' on East River bridges.
    
A new global warming treaty is being negotiated. The first round begins Sunday in Bonn, Germany.
