Family of Slain Long Island Teen Sues for $110 Million, Claims School Ignored MS-13 Threats

Two months after Kayla Cuevas was found murdered in Brentwood, a victim of suspected gun violence, her mother still can’t fathom she’s gone. Natalie Pasquarella reports.

A $110 million lawsuit claims a New York high school ignored warnings that MS-13 members were threatening a student who was later found beaten to death.

The mother of 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas filed the lawsuit Monday against the Brentwood School District on Long Island. Cuevas and 15-year-old Nisa Mickens were beaten and stabbed in September 2016.

Federal authorities have arrested more than a half-dozen alleged members of MS-13 in the killings.

A spokesman for the Brentwood School District declined to comment.

Cuevas' mother, Evelyn Rodriguez, claims in the lawsuit that employees and educators failed to act when told that the girl was being threatened. The lawsuit says the bullying went on for two years before the teenager was killed.

MS-13 is blamed for 25 killings on Long Island since January 2016.
