What to Know

  • The NYC Department of Education's website for online enrollment crashed and was not working for hours Monday morning
  • Monday was the first day of pre-K enrollment in the city
  • by noon the site was running at full speed; NYC DOE said the technical difficulties were brought on by "high traffic"

Monday marked the first day of enrollment for tens of thousands of New York City preschool families for the fall of 2019, but the enrollment process turned out to not be a smooth one for many families.

The NYC Department of Education's website for online enrollment crashed and was not working for hours Monday morning. However, by noon the site was running at full speed.

In a statement to NBC New York during the technical difficulties, spokesman for the NYC Department of Education said the cause for the site crash was due to “high traffic.”

“Lots of New York City families are excited about 3-K and Pre-K, and got an early start on the first day of applications this morning.” NYC DOE Press Secretary Will Mantell said. “Our online application tool, Myschools.nyc, has briefly gone down due to high traffic and we apologize for the inconvenience.”
