Five-Day Repair Work to Impact E, M Subway Service Beginning Day After Christmas: MTA

When the L train shuts down for its major rehabilitation project in 2019, riders will have new options to get around, including expanded service on other subway lines, a special direct ferry and new bus service on 14th Street, much of which will become closed to cars, the MTA and the Department of Transportation say. Andrew Siff reports.

The MTA will temporarily close the tunnel between Queens and Manhattan that carries the E and M trains starting the day after Christmas, the agency announced.

The M train will be suspended while the E train will run on the F line between Roosevelt Avenue and West Fourth Street so MTA workers can get in, make extensive reports and get out, the MTA said. The repairs are part of the city’s Subway Action Plan.

The service changes are in effect beginning at 5 a.m. Dec. 26 all the way to the morning of New Year’s Eve. Full service will be restored by 8 a.m. Dec. 31.

Repairs include third rail and track replacement and new signal wiring.
