Firefighters Battle Blaze At Upper East Side Church: FDNY

The fire broke out in the basement of the seven-story Russian Orthodox church

Crews battled a two-alarm blaze at an Upper East Side church early Friday morning, the FDNY says.

The fire broke out just after midnight in the basement of Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, at 15 E. 97th St., according to the fire department. More than 100 firefighters and 25 units were sent to the seven-story church and brought the blaze under control about 2:30 a.m.

The church’s basement is being used as a storage space, which apparently complicated firefighting efforts.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital, the department says.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, as are the extent of the damages.
