A retired New York police detective has been sentenced to three to nine years for the death of a pedestrian more than three years ago.
The New York Times reports Friday that retired NYPD Det. Kevin Spellman tearfully apologized to two dozen relatives and friends of the 66-year-old woman he hit while driving drunk in the Bronx on Oct. 30, 2009.
Spellman was sentenced Friday in state Supreme Court in the Bronx following his conviction of second-degree manslaughter in December. He faced up to 15 years in prison.
During the trial, the jury heard testimony that the 45-year-old former detective's blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
