A superintendent of a Bronx NYCHA building was shot multiple times following a dispute with a coworker, police said.

Gunfire broke out around 2:15 p.m. on the third floor at the Fort Independence Houses on Bailey Avenue, police said. It's near the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Kingsbridge area.

A 43-year-old man was shot three times and taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The suspect fled in a car, and was being sought by police into the night.

Investigators are still piecing together what happened but believe both the suspect and the victim, who was the shooter's supervisor, work for NYCHA. Tenant Association President Barbara Lauray said that the dispute between the two coworkers had been ongoing for some time before the shooting occurred.

"It did not have to happen. It should not have happened," said Lauray. "I don't care if you have to fire him, you do what you have to do. But you put those people in danger, as well as the residents in this development ... anyone could've been outside."

The victim is expected to recover, police said. There were no other injuries reported.

Bronx City Councilman Fernando Cabrera said that she shooting serves as "yet another reminder that we need more effective gun control measures and double down on our efforts to end gun violence," according to a statement. "I offer my prayers and best wishes to the injured employee for a rapid and complete recovery from injuries sustained in the incident.”

The housing authority is still gathering information and hasn't immediately made a statement, and a police investigation is ongoing.
