Driver Killed, 14 Hurt as New Jersey Transit Bus, Van Collide in Newark: Officials

One person was killed and 14 others were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon when a New Jersey Transit bus crashed head-on into a van in Newark, officials say. Brynn Gingras reports.

A driver was killed and 14 others were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon when a New Jersey Transit bus collided head-on with a van in Newark, officials say.

According to initial reports, the van entered the wrong lane at Port Street, hitting the bus near Doremus Avenue about 5:15 p.m., an NJ Transit spokesman said. 

The bus was carrying 17 passengers, and the van was transporting two people, according to the spokesman.

The van's driver was taken to University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead.

The 14 bus passengers sustained minor injuries ranging from cuts to the face to chest injuries.
