Yesterday afternoon the City Council Land Use Committee voted 17-4 to support a rezoning at the southern end of Dumbo that would allow the developer Two Trees to construct a 17-story mixed-use building that would include both luxury and affordable apartments as well as commercial space and a new public middle school. The vote was by a larger margin than expected and was unusual for the fact that it went against the wishes of local City Council member David Yassky; Council Members Avella, Goia and Barron joined Yassky in voting against the project. “The Brooklyn Bridge is a national treasure,” said Avella. “It should be protected — that is the bottom line.” Gus Sheha, president of the DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance, echoed the sentiment when he told the Brooklyn Paper, “It’s clear that this committee today sold the Brooklyn Bridge.” “I have to vote yes…because it’s in the best interest of the community overall,” said Committee Member Robert Jackson. Two Trees’ Jed Walentas told the paper he was “pleased” with the outcome. The final Council-wide vote is expected next week; early handicapping puts the odds in favor of the proposal passing.
