High Winds Menace Region

High winds menaced the New York City area Saturday causing property damage and power outages.

Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph toppled trees and caused power outages in the tri-state region Saturday.

Downed trees in Allendale, New Jersey, knocked over power lines that ignited a brush fire.

On Long Island, a toppled tree crushed to roofs of two cars in Eastport.

More than 5,000 homes and businesses from New Jersey to Long Island lost power because of downed power lines, utility companies reported.

The dangerous gusts came less than three weeks after a 37-year-old woman died after being struck by a piece of flying plywood jarred loose from a Greenwich Village construction site by strong winds.
