Man Tries to Lure Boy, 11, With Candy, Basketballs: NYPD

Parents are being warned after Monday’s scare in Brooklyn. Lori Bordonaro reports.

Police are looking for the man who they say tried to lure an 11-year-old boy to a car in Brooklyn by promising to give him candy and basketballs.

The boy was walking on Rockaway and Hegeman avenues in Brownsville when he was approached by the man.

The man asked the boy if he wanted candy, authorities said. When the child said no, police say the man asked if he played basketball.

The boy told him he did and the man allegedly told him that he had two basketballs in his car, police say.

The child never saw a car and continued to walk to school, tailed by the suspect. When the child made it to class, the man walked away, police say.

After arriving at school, the boy told a teacher, who called police.

Parents in the area were alarmed by the attempted luring.

"You can't be too safe out here nowadays," said Rena Spaulding. "Too much is happening. We aren't living in a world like we used to."

"Thank God he was smart enough to do whatever he did to get away," she added.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
