No. 1 Train Subway Service Shut Down This Weekend

Riders looking to take the 1 train this weekend are out of luck. It shut down as of 11:30 pm Friday night for repairs. Natalie Pasquarella has the information you need.

No subways will run on the No. 1 train line this weekend, the MTA says.

The shutdown starts at 11:30 p.m. Friday and continues until 5 a.m. Monday.

As alternatives, riders can take the No. 2 and 3 trains, which will run local and replace the No. 1 between Chambers and 96th streets. No. 3 trains operate to and from Chambers Street during late-night hours.

Buses run in five sections making stops on the No. 1 line:

  • Broadway between 242nd and 207th streets, stopping at the 207 Street A station
  • Dyckman Street between No. 1 and A stations late night only. Use M100 service days/evenings.
  • St Nicholas Avenue between 191st and 168th streets. Free transfer for M3 service.
  • Broadway between 168th and 96th streets (Express/Local)
  • Lower Manhattan between Chambers Street and South Ferry

Riders should use the A train to get to and from nearby stops in Washington Heights, along Central Park West and Eighth Avenue. For Lower Manhattan, transfer to and from R trains at Times Square or use No. 4 and 5 service at Fulton Street.

The MTA said the work was being performed simultaneously during the weekend when ridership is lowest to reduce the impact to customers.

Signs warning of the changes were posted on all stations serving the 1 line; even so, many riders say they were out of the loop about the closures.

"This is my first time seeing the sign," one commuter said Friday night.

"I didn't know anything about it," said 1 train rider Dail St. Claire, but added, "Maintenance is important. It'll just inconvenience some people but people must be safe."
