Resident Killed in Fire at Newark Senior Center: Official

A man was killed in a fire at a senior center in Newark. Drew Wilder reports.

A fire at a senior center in Newark killed a 72-year-old man on Saturday, officials said.

The fire broke out in the living room of an apartment on the fourth floor at St. Mary's Villa on Sanford Avenue, the Newark Fire Chief said.

The firehouse is across the street from St. Mary's and firefighters responded in seconds, the chief said.

William Fulmore, 72, died in the blaze, prosecutors said. He appeared to suffer cardiac arrest related to smoke inhalation, the fire chief said.

The fire was contained to one apartment.

Other residents described confusion as they tried to flee the building.

“When I came out of my apartment, my neighbor across the hall from me said it’s a fire, but the alarm didn’t get off," said resident Myra Hamme. "The lights were just blinking so I knew something was happening.”

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the blaze.
