Today's edition of oddball lawsuits features LVMH Moët Hennessey Louis Vuitton vs. Hyundai Motor Co. The luxury house is suing the car maker over a Super Bowl ad that showed a basketball emblazoned with a pattern that they claim bears too much a resemblance to the LV logo.
First of all, perhaps making basketballs with high-fashion logos got us into this predicament in the first place. Basically, the spot consists of a bunch of dudes playing pick-up basketball with a ball that looks like a Louis V, under a theme of accessible luxury. LVMH has filed an injunction to prevent Hyundai from benefiting from the convention of the legendary logo and therefore associating themselves with Louis Vuitton -- for shame! Obviously, they want the commercial destroyed and "unspecified damages" which we'd love to have specified for us. Hyundai didn't comment.
