For the Urban Adventurer: An Ice-Climbing Getaway

Ever wonder what it would be like to climb a frozen waterfall? Well strap on your crampons and head North to Plattekill Falls, NY where you’ll be in for the climb of your life! Check out Adventure Society for your adventure of a lifetime.

Here's an oldie but goodie for urban adventurers. Check out NBC New York's report last year on ice climbing in the Catskills in which Alpine Endeavors leads a crew up a frozen waterfall.

Alpine Endeavors provided the guides for this particular expedition, but they lead other fun treks, too --  rock climbing, alpine climbing, hiking and snowshoeing -- in places close to as close as an hour and a half away from New York City.

There aren't any hard numbers on the number of calories burned during a typical session of ice climbing, but this site claims to calculate how many calories you burn in an hour of rock-climbing, which is probably the closest substitute. A 160-pound 30-year-old man who is six feet tall would burn about 520 calories an hour, according to the site's calculations.

They've got a couple of ice-climbing trips, but they'll be the last ones of the season, so the time is now. Rates for a one-day basic ice-climbing trip when there are three other people in the group (the minimum required) is $140.
