After a warm and sticky Wednesday, Storm Team 4 is tracking the chance for showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon — and some of the cells that develop could turn severe, especially south and west of the New York City metropolitan area.

Main impacts include potentially damaging winds and hail, but parts of central and southern New Jersey are more likely to see severe weather, according to Storm Team 4. Luckily - the city, northern new Jersey suburbs and most of the rest of the tri-state will miss most, if not all, of the storms.

Some scattered storms popped up across parts of the tri-state early Thursday, but more widespread storms may move in as that cold front approaches. Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., there is the greatest chance for severe weather, Storm Team 4 says.

Some isolated severe thunderstorms could develop, potentially bringing damaging winds and heavy downpours.

Heavy rain looks to cover most of the region during the evening rush, which could potentially snarl traffic. By 9 p.m., the storms look to taper off as the cold front clears the area, and bringing in much cooler and less humid air for Friday.

Thursday featured a bit cooler temperatures than Wednesday, which felt more like July than mid-September because of the surge in heat and humidity.

Temperatures will drop into the low 70s by Friday, giving the end of the work week a much more pleasant, fall feel.

The mercury rebounds a bit by the weekend, with highs expected in the high 70s Saturday along with a chance of thunderstorms in the evening hours. Expect more of the 80s Sunday through the middle of next week.
