A few scattered storms made their way into the tri-state Monday evening, chasing out the as the unseasonable warmth many in the area have been waiting for.
The mercury hit 85 degrees in Central Park during the afternoon, making it the warmest day of 2019, Storm Team 4 says. It was even warmer at LaGuardia, which saw a sweaty 87 degrees, a welcome respite from the spate of unusually cold weather that gripped the region last week. An approaching cold front will cool the mercury back into the 70s Tuesday, and that same front brought a few storms hitting a few areas in New Jersey and heading east into the city, Yonkers and Connecticut.
Some heavy downpours hit locally during the evening commute, but once the front swings through, any remaining showers and storms will move out, paving the way for a more comfortable air mass.

Sunday night was a different story, as strong storms brought intense lightning and damaging winds to parts of New York and New Jersey. Video showed significant lightning lighting up the sky in parts of those states, and the National Weather Service received reports of trees down in Orange County.

The weather also disrupted air travel. About 30 percent of flights in and out of Newark and LaGuardia airports were delayed, according to FlightAware.com.
