High Winds Rip Through Region

High winds ripped through northern New Jersey and New York City Friday evening, with some wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

Rain tapered down around the tri-state Friday afternoon, but high winds and frigid temperatures are in store overnight. Spring isn't too far behind, with warmer temperatures and more rain storms in the forecast.

Another rain storm is expected to hit the region on Monday, part of a spring weather pattern that will also bring elevated temperatures and fewer frigid lows, forecasts indicate.

A rain storm that moved into the area Thursday evening dropped about 1-2 inches before moving out Friday.  A flood watch expired at 8 p.m., and some flooding has been reported on roadways in the suburbs.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for New York City from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. The weather service says there could be sustained winds in the Big Apple of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph.

The wind could also bring down trees and power lines, particularly in Connecticut and Long Island, where wind gusts are expected to be highest.

Police have already reported some trees and power lines down in Huntington and East Northport, as well as flooding in Huntington.

Air travel was affected by the rainy, windy weather as well.

LaGuardia Airport has departure delays averaging 2 hours and 49 minutes. Newark Liberty International Airport flight departures are averaging 3 hours, reports the Federal Aviation Administration.

John F. Kennedy International Airport has delays of up to 30 minutes on departures, but that wait time is likely to increase, the FAA says. Arrival delays are 15 minutes or less. Passengers are advised to check with their airline to determine if their flight is affected.
