Freezing Rain, Wintry Mix Coat Tri-State With “Dangerous” Glaze of Ice

A wintry mix continues to fall on New York City and surrounding areas Monday, coating the sidewalks and roads with what Storm Team 4 calls "a dangerous glaze of ice" that created slippery conditions for the evening rush.

A travel advisory was issued for New York City ahead of the storm, which also complicated the morning commute with slick sidewalks and roads. Storm Team 4 says the system mostly moved out of the area by the late afternoon, but lingering light snow showers Monday night combined with temperatures in the 20s will make for at least moderately icy conditions through Tuesday morning.

Freezing rain fell in and around the five boroughs and into northern New Jersey through much of the day Monday, while snow fell in areas further north.

By Monday afternoon, parts of Dutchess and Ulster counties had substantial snowfall. Cottekill saw the highest snow totals, with 7.8 inches piling up. Connecticut's Fairfield County saw 7 inches.

New York City hardly saw a dusting, with just 0.2 inches recorded at LaGuardia Airport as the system wound down. Ridgewood in New Jersey's Bergen County had 1 inch.

The ice complicated travel across the region, though. Hundreds of flights out of the region's three major airports were delayed or canceled because of the wintry weather. Amtrak suspended some train service between New York City and Albany because of the storm, but neither New York City mass transit nor NJ Transit reported extensive delays or cancellations.

New Jersey State Police reported hundreds of calls from motorists on highways who were in weather-related accidents or needed help due to weather from midnight through 3 p.m.

Alternate side parking will be back in effect in New York City Tuesday for the first time in 18 days.

Another bout of snow is possible Thursday.

Highs will remain in the low 30s until Friday, when the mercury is expected to plummet -- expect a high of 17 and a low of 6. Temperatures will be frigid through the weekend with the high around 20.
