Wintry Mix to Create Messy Morning Commute

A wintry mix of rain and snow is expected to continue overnight into Wednesday morning, making the morning commute messy for many.

New York City and the nearby suburbs should expect up to an inch of slushy accumulation, with a hard rain eventually changing over to a mix of sleet and snow. The heaviest of the sleet and snow will fall during the overnight hours. There is the potential for some slick driving, especially just north of the city. Most of the mix will change back to rain before sunrise. Some isolated slippery spots are possible for the morning commute. 

North and west of the city can the sleet and snow mixture to turn to just snow overnight. Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches of snow are possible by morning. Some localized areas north and west of I-287 could receive a bit more. Slippery driving and school delays are likely Wednesday morning in these areas.

South and east of the city rain showers will likely arrive around 7 p.m. Expect rain through the night, with lingering showers into Wednesday morning. Up to an inch of rain is possible.

Most of the light snow, sleet and rain should be over with by early Wednesday afternoon. Highs will top out at around 40 Wednesday. The rest of the week looks quiet and chilly, with temperatures in the 30s and 40s.
