Who Wants Vuitton for Pennies?

Be prepared to throw an elbow or two as the “Bergdorf’s of thrift shops” hosts a special fall preview shopping event

The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Thrift Shop is not just any second-hand affair: Sometimes referred to as the “Bergdorf’s of thrift shops,” it’s an occasion to unearth surefire high-end, gently-used bargains and do good while you shop (proceeds benefit the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center).

The Fall Opening event runs tomorrow through Saturday; highlights include Hermès scarves (regularly around $375, but starting at $185 here), vintage Valentino costume jewelry ($65-$150), and recent clothing, footwear and accessories from the likes of Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, and more starting around $125. This sale isn’t for the fainthearted – the fierceness with which certain devotees attack the store’s opening events can make the Barneys Warehouse Sale scene seem positively zen. Consider yourselves warned. For a sneak peek at a few gems to beeline for, check out the gallery at the New York Shopping Diary here.
