Hey, you know what sounds like the most depressing place ever to go shopping? The area right outside the entrance to one of New York's largest jails, Rikers Island. A City Room writer stopped by the place for a little browsing, dropped into a bullet-proof-glass-covered jewelry store, and chatted with a guy that sells hot dogs out of a truck. "The hot dog man, Mr. Samolis, said he often gives free food to inmates who are released from Rikers, since they often have no money."
