Downstairs at Kirna Zabête, noonish today
It is looking bleak out there, friends. Despite generous discounts around town, people just aren't shopping like they used to. Over lunch, we dropped by Greene Street boutique Kirna Zabête, where today only all fall merchandise is 40% off. We expected a frenzy, but the place was quiet (maybe we missed an early morning rush)?
Heading north, we passed Daryl K, a Bond Street shop that not too long ago had "F***k the Recession" emblazoned on its front windows. Today, that message has been replaced with one about a 50% off "Victory Sale." At Kirna Zabête, there was a trickle of shoppers. Daryl K was completely empty when we walked past. As was Iisli next door, which has marked clothing 65% off. So what's going on here? Are people just completely refraining from shopping, or are they holding off for deeper discounts? Maybe it's a bit of both. One thing is sure: anyone buying at retail these days is a total fool.
