Finally: Up Close With Comme des Garçons for H&M

There's not much left to say about the Comme des Garçons for H&M collection. You've seen the online lookbook. You've read the early reviews. And you're either a Comme fan, or you're not. Seeing the clothes in person at the press preview at Espace on far West 42nd Street last night was interesting, though—we noticed a few details that we hadn't previously been able to discern from the photos online. For instance, the ruffly $350 showpiece dress is constructed partially of a skirt suit, the front being mostly dress, and the back mostly suit. Not the easiest thing to pull off. And the drop-crotch pants were a little more woolly than we had imagined. Overall, though, there were few revelations. The only real surprise: what we thought would be a dry press preview was instead a big, fancy event complete with a red carpet, two bars stocked with the highest of high-end liquor and waiters with trays of delicious canapés. Which almost made up for us not being able to try everything on right then and there.
