That's Rather Hideous, De-Duplex'd Edition

Longtime readers of the site may recognize this very special residence as that of indicted money manager Alberto Vilar—the guy who ripped off Phoebe Cates' mother way back when—at 860 United Nations Plaza in Midtown East. When last we dropped by, the year was 2005, money had no meaning, and the place went up for sale for $14.5 million. A year later, it PriceChopper down to the $13m range, then slipped off the market, unsold. A few days back, it resurfaced, now listed with Brown Harris Stevens and an asking price of—hold your breath—$5.5 million. A big part of the reason for the massive chop, however? What used to be a duplex has been returned to a mere one floor's worth of 11 rooms. Sweet goldleaf, soldier on!
