Survey Ranks NYC's Best Neighborhoods

Where's the best place to live in New York?

It might be an impossible question to answer, but a new survey attempts to breaks it down, crowning Park Slope and the Lower East Side number 1 and 2 respectively in a list of the city's 50 most livable neighborhoods.

The New York Magazine survey admits that picking a list of best neighborhoods, especially in this city, is a pretty subjective task.  Do you value nightlife over public schools?  Shopping over parks? Transit ahead of cost of living?  You get the idea.

The survey came up with a string of various factors that make up a neighborhoods quality of life -- stuff like affordability and housing cost, transit, safety, diversity, green space, bars and nightlife, restaurants, shopping, schools, and creative --which seems to mean some sort of art scene.

Park Slope cleaned up in all these areas, except for affordability and diversity. But the Brooklyn 'hood was lauded for its beauty, proximity to Prospect Park, low crime and great restaurants and bars.

The Lower East Side earned its number 2 ranking in no small part because of its nightlife and incredible shopping and restaurants.  The downside? It can be noisy and housing can be pretty run-down.

But don't count out Queens.  The adorable haven of Sunnyside grabs the No. 3 spot.

Rounding out the top 10: Cobble Hill/Bourum Hill at 4 Greenpoint at 5; Brooklyn Heights at 6; Carroll Gardens/Gowanus at 7; Murray Hill at 8; Prospect Heights at 9; East Village at 10.
