Check In Early at the Standard

André Balaz's much-hyped MPD mega-hotel is ready for you. Sort of. Down By the Hipster is busy spreading the word of early "friends-and-family" room rates at The Standard New York. Starting December 10 a handful of rooms will be available to a public that, if early press is an indication, is salivating like a tourist waiting for the Rockefeller Center tree to be lit. The New York Observer called the project — which the High Line runs through — "the most significant New York building in years."

Though the building is still a busy construction site, and likely will be for the duration of this soft opening, guests can book rooms starting Wednesday for the $195-a-night rate, which will be available until February 9. The rate's a steal, but you'll be roughing it by Balaz, er, standards. Room service is slated to start in early '09, so you'll be fending for yourself. Which in this case means going down the street to Pastis.
