Calatrava Cuts Will Get WTC Memorial Done on Time (Really!)

Next week, a comprehensive new timetable for the World Trade Center site will be released, but one of the more pressing issues has been how to get the revised 9/11 Memorial & Museumopen in time for the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The Times and Observer report that officials have figured it out—agreeing on a simplified design (columns!) for the Santiago Calatrava-designed transit station that will sit beneath it all. The 10,000th redesign of the starchitect's PATH terminal will help get elements of the memorial—the plaza, footprint chambers, waterfalls and walls lined with the names of the victims—done by August, 2011, but the museum won't open until a year later. Still, that's a fairly stunning turnaround, because up until very recently those involved said it would be impossible for the memorial to be open by the anniversary. In other WTC news, the Sun reports that the Port Authority will likely miss the deadline to turn over land to Larry Silverstein for the beginning of construction on Tower 2. Hey, some things never change.
