Broadway Prepped for Pedestrian Takeover

The shutdown of Broadway to vehicular traffic between 42nd Street to 47th Street and 33rd Street to 35th Street is getting most of the publicity (and controversy), but another part of Midtown's battle of pedestrians vs. cars is now taking shape.

A narrow strip of pedestrian plazas will line Broadway between the Times Square shutdown and Columbus Circle, dotted with seating and café tables. Right now busy battalions of Department of Transportation workers are staking claim to swaths of the boulevard, painting new lines and taking other measures to make the NYC driving experience all the more hellish.

Flashing signs on side streets leading into Times Square now announce DOT's D-Day, declaring, "Bway Closed As Of May 24." Drivers: You have been put on notice.
