Monday Opening Report: Lula Sweet Apothecary Open, Charles Not

1) West Village: Thrillist reports today that the ”exclusive” new resto Charles helmed by entrepreneurs Cobi Levy and Doug Akin will open Wednesday. A few details: “The Mediterranean menu's still in the works, but pre-opening dishes ranged from braised beef short rib w/ swiss chard & golden raisins, to seared duck breast with roasted grapes & escarole, to diver scallops & prawns w/ fingerling potatoes & saffron (so expensive, it actually comes in dime bag-like baggies; foodies ingest either in bumps, or by free bouilla-basing)." Status: Not Open. The owners tell us it will not open Wednesday, leaving the official opening up in the air. 234 W. 4th Street; no phone. [Thrillist]

2) East Village: Gaijin Girl and EV Grieve offer info on a new vegan ice creamery called Lula’s Sweet Apothecary. It's semi-confirmed that first location has opened on E. 6th Street, with a possible new location going in on Second Ave. Gaijin Girl seems to have been inside the former location: "Yes, now the East Village boasts a fun and tasty (albeit small) vegan ice creamery...offering all of your childhood favorites, from hot chocolate sundaes, to banana splits...complete with a bunch of "Cold Stone" type toppings...including coconut, sprinkles and even vegan gummy bears (YUM!). Made in-house, the ice cream's good, and reasonably priced for the Manhattan crowd (around $6 for a sundae.)" Status: Certified Open. 516 E. 6th Street; no phone. [GG; EV Grieve]
