Five Brunches Your Mother Will Approve Of

Mother's Day is May 10th, but we recommend strategizing now. Do you really want to be the son or daughter who didn't make plans ahead of time?

1. Mudspot If Mom has even an ounce of ex-hippie in her, it'll come out at the Mudspot, the East Village brick-and-mortar counterpart to the coffee-pouring Mudtruck. Sit indoors or out back, suck down some of the best coffee below 14th Street, and nosh on flavor-packed huevos rancheros and impossibly thick French toast while the tattooed waitstaff throws some more Jimi or Janis on the 'Pod.

2. Prune Does Mom warm up after a good Bloody Mary? Here, there's a whole menu of them, some served with homemade radish and shallot pickles and a beer chaser. Get the eggs benedict or the sausages (lamb, homemade) and oysters. One caveat: Unless you're prepared to rise and shine very early, send a scout ahead to stand in line. Prune doesn't reserve for brunch, and the wait is as long as the food is good.

3. No. 7 This Fort Greene newbie is elegant, with its black-lacquered wainscoting and sexy old-world glass lamps. But the reason you're here, at least as far as brunch goes, is the fried chicken. Yes, for brunch. Even Mom will like it, washed down with a local microbrew.

4. Morandi Ricotta fritters, crepes of every stripe and strong coffee await at this comfortably elegant Keith McNally outpost in the West Village -- but we recommend the grilled pizza "occhio di bue," which comes topped with a perfectly fried egg. Also: Wild boar bacon!

5. Bubby's If Mom is more traditional, possibly fried chicken and oysters for breakfast will freak her right out. In this case, Bubby's, in Tribeca, is your answer. The ramshackle standby serves up hearty, all-American classics that aren't likely to scare or offend, from fluffy pancakes to corned beef hash, and you can't leave without a slice of pie (try the sour cherry). Get here early as well; there's almost always a wait.
