5/31: Beach Party, Food Truck Fest & More

Where to spend Memorial Day without leaving NYC

EAT FLEET: Bklyn Yard, that grassy patch on the water (OK, on the Gowanus) reopens for the summer with Parked: Gowanus Food Truck Festival with the likes of Van Leeuwen Artisan ice cream, Rickshaw Dumplings, Steve’s Key Lime Pie and many more in attendance. Skip breakfast—the four-wheeled fair starts at 12-7PM.

BEACH BALL: The South St Seaport Water Taxi Beach Memorial Day Bash involves all the perks of a seaside getaway—sand in your shoes, cold drinks, and a bottomless raw bar (clams and oysters are 80 cents each between 4 and 6PM)—minus the flight delays or bumper-to-bumper on the LIE. 11AM-11PM.

SOARING SOUNDS: Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” is our personal favorite on the music program at the annual New York Philharmonic Memorial Day concert at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Your only decision: whether to listen inside the magnificent structure or find a spot on the Pulpit Green (they pipe the music out into the open). The concert is free and seating is first-come, first-served. 8PM.
