11/17: Mustaches vs. Cancer, Short Films at the Box, Queens Eats

STACHE AND CARRY: Gentlemen, what if we told you you could stop shaving AND help find a cure for disease at the same time? Mustaches vs. Cancer is a 60-day grow-a-thon that works just like a regular fund-raising marathon: You solicit donations, getting loved ones and colleagues to pledge cash against your mustache growth towards charity (in this case, the pediatric department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center). In two years, $75,000+ has been raised by upper lips for through M vs. C. Come to Johnny Utah’s to fête the magnanimous power of facial hair with an evening of mustache-themed--special cocktails, on-site grooming by a barber who knows his wax, and much more. 7PM.

SHORT, SWEET: Future Shorts is one of those endeavors that you want to see succeed: Based in London, it’s a worldwide monthly festival of short films, giving aspiring filmmakers the chance to have their work seen in 12 countries and 50 cities from a single submission. Tonight at the Box, see the program Future Shorts ONE, which includes award-winning documentaries, music videos and mini-fiction—all with eye towards bringing these worthy programs to NYC on a regular basis. 8:30PM.

POWER IN NUMBERS: The folks behind the Queens Harvest Food Co-op have been diligently working to establish a co-op that would serve the area in much the same way that other famous co-op serves Brooklyn. Tonight, they fund-raise with a smorgasbord for the senses at the Foundry in Long Island City. At Queens Eats, snack on fare from local purveyors like M. Wells and Cream Bakery, sip Sixpoint and wine curated by Astoria shop Off the Vine, take in live music and special guests (Tamara Reynolds, creator of one of NYC’s oldest and greatest underground supper clubs, will speak of food and her beloved borough). 6PM.
