Out Today: “The Sartorialist”

The bar-setting style photoblog is now a coffee-table book (and just as addictive)

A few years ago, fashion-world vet Scott Schuman taught himself some photography basics and began snapping portraits of people on the street who rocked their own personal style – rarely fashiony types, and almost never those who followed the industry’s edicts to the letter (must! wear! gladiator sandals!). Because of that key distinction (and his flawless eye for selecting wonderful subjects, in cities all over the globe), the blog he kept, thesartorialist.com, was something of a revolution.

And now it can be had in book form. Out today, “The Sartorialist” (Penguin Press) is a compendium of Schuman’s favorite portraits, and is just as addictive as the blog. (A bells-and-whistles $175 “Bespoke Edition” was released earlier this month.) Also, it makes us want to wear cummerbunds and elbow-length puce gloves. Funny, that.

PICK UP a copy of “The Sartorialist” ($25) at St. Marks Bookshop, 31 3rd Avenue near 9th Street; 212-260-7853
