Sneak Peek: Topical Sondheim at the Public

"Road Show" opens in previews tonight at the Public Theater - and its boom-to-bust themes feel very "now."

Real estate schemes, oversized growth, greedy developers, insane speculation that fuels deception. These are the themes at the heart of Stephen Sondheim's Road Show -- a musical about two brothers' intertwined lives and fortunes in the early 20th century -- but they could be just as easily ripped from the CNN crawl. Though it was written 14 years ago, the show could not feel better timed. It's standard Sondheimian stuff - wordplay galore, the whole cast on stage at all times climbing all over an elaborate set. The show opens in previews tonight at the Public Theater and runs through December 28, with a nice ensemble led by Michael Cerveris (he of the Tony for Sweeney Todd, almost unrecognizable with hair) and Alexander Gemignani.
