New Meadowlands To Be Christened By Green Day, And Jazz Hands!

New Meadowlands To Be Christened By Green Day, And Jazz Hands!

Last year, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opened up his new Cowboys Stadium to universal gasps and look-at-thats. This year, another billion-dollar footballoplex will open up, but oddly enough, the new Giants/Jets stadium isn’t getting the same feverish kind of press that Jerryworld did.

There are a couple of reasons for this. First off, Cowboys Stadium did the whole unnecessary luxury stadium thing first. Secondly, Jerry Jones is a better salesman than the Mara family or Woody Johnson. Thirdly, HOLY SMOKES THAT’S A BIG JUMBOTRON!

The Jets and Giants must be sensing this collective dose of apathy, because they’re pulling out all the stops to make sure the opening of the new Meadowlands stadium is a marquee event. That means bringing together Green Day and those crazy Broadway kids from “American Idiot” to play halftime of the Jets’ MNF opener. From our colleague Mike Florio over at PFT:

Gang Green will commemorate the event with a halftime performance on the 50-yard line from Green Day …

They'll play Last of the American Girls, along with the cast of … their Broadway show called American Idiot.

The Green Day news comes on the heels of learning that Dave Matthews Band and Taylor Swift will play before the first game of the season -- Vikings/Saints -- on September 9th.

It appears you can’t have a big NFL game right now without organizers wanting to attach a big name musical artist to the event. Given the massive ratings success of last year’s Super Bowl, expect this sort of thing to become much more common than it already is. I can already see musical acts playing before every playoff game, and every SNF and MNF game. It will happen at some point.

Too many people are watching the NFL for it not to happen. Just so long as it doesn’t happen between plays, I’m all right with it.
