GO EAST: With the end of bikini season comes the ability to devote oneself fully to food festivals. All the better to enjoy the Asian Feastival, where you can sample dishes from more than 20 Queens restaurants specializing in authentic regional flavors from the east, plus attend panels on eating and cooking (including an on-site Asian farmer’s market and a shopping tutorial with Not Eating Out in NY’s Cathy Erway). At the Sheraton Laguardia East, 12-5PM.
OLDE SCHOOL: Staten Island’s Historic Richmond Town dates back to the 17th century, but the amusements at the Richmond County Fair will be a touch more modern than that – from a Ferris wheel and coaster to pie- and hot dog-eating contests and live music, it’s like a small-town fair in the city. 11AM.
JUNGLE RHYTHMS: It’s a little ska, a little surf rock and a little salsa (with about a hundred other sounds thrown in, including moog and an accordion/organ hybrid called the Electravox): the cumbia of the Chicha Libre collective – based on Peruvian music from the Amazon – may sound overcomplicated to describe, but its effect is simple indeed: Pure, unadulterated hip-shaking. The band plays Park Slope’s Barbès at 9:30PM.
