GOOD CAUSE: The Lower Eastside Girls Club – a non-profit that builds strong women out of girls by helping them develop skills, talents and community – takes over Element for a Mardi Gras Benefit Celebration Ball. Come by to hail the king and queen of the ’Gras (writer Jonathan Ames and musician/performance artist CuCu Diamantes), shimmy to Dixieland from NOLA’s own Loose Marbles and the Hungry March Band, and gorge on Two Boots pizza. 7PM.
WELCOME BACK: When we heard that a fire had ravaged Great Jones Café last year, we steeled ourselves for the end of an era. But like the city that it pays homage to, this Louisiana eatery is back, spirit raging, gumbo recipe unchanged, and annual Fat Tuesday plans intact. There are plenty of restaurants celebrating Mardi Gras tonight; kick back a Hurricane at one with real soul. 6PM on.
VIEUX CARRE: The Time Out Dining & Libation Society does Fat Tuesday up right at the Flatiron’s Rye House: Mixologists Jim Kearns and Lynnette Marrero will be pouring classic New Orleans cocktails (we smell Sazeracs), while the kitchen will turn out Crescent City-inspired snacks (crab ravigote, shrimp étouffée) to fuel the shaking of your moneymaker along with the boozy, ragtimey Red Hook Ramblers. 7PM.
