12/11: James Beard House + Pig Roast + You

Plus, librarians let their hair down at Biblioball 2009 and the Phenomenal Handclap Band

PORKY’S: Resto’s Bobby Hellen brings his charcuterie know-how and his sharpest knives to a very special event indeed: he’ll be roasting a whole pig, lamb, and more in the garden of the James Beard House. The resulting family-style feast includes lamb heart confit, boudin noir tart, and porchetta with fennel pollen, rosemary, thyme, and pig liver. It’s enough to make one think turkey for the holidays is passé. 7PM; reserve at 212.627.2308.

WELL READ: The New York City conglomeration of librarians, archivists and other literary types who make up The Desk Set want you to get all dolled up and party for a good cause. Biblioball 2009: Baby, It’s Cold Outside Winter Formal Fancy Pants Dance Party will raise money for the nonprofit Literacy for Incarcerated Teens, all while providing you with a night of pure delight: foot juggling, brass bands (like the Rude Mechanical Orchestra and Hungry March Band), sweets from La Tia Faby Baked Goods and Sweetie Pies, whiskey tastings from Tuthilltown Spirits -- plus, of course, a host of ladies and gents who handily remind that “bookish” and “glasses” should both be filed under S for sexy. The Bell House, 8PM.

NEXT BIG THING: The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a collective of sorts, a shadowy nexus where NYC area indie rock and soul bigwigs meet to form music that’s been described as closer to a spiritual revival than a gig. See what the hoopla’s all about at Bowery Ballroom tonight; 8PM doors.
