GONE BY: Go see Lionel Rogosin’s movie On the Bowery (1957) not for its critical acclaim—which includes an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary—but because it captures something quintessential about the soul of a New York gone by: In crisp black and white, peer at the Bowery of flophouses and elevated subway tracks, 50 years but a seeming millennium away from the shiny shopping boulevard it is now.
