GONE BY: Go see Lionel Rogosin’s movie On the Bowery (1957) not for its critical acclaim—which includes an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary—but because it captures something quintessential about the soul of a New York gone by: In crisp black and white, peer at the Bowery of flophouses and elevated subway tracks, 50 years but a seeming millennium away from the shiny shopping boulevard it is now. (Watch the trailer.) At Film Forum through November 25, schedule varies.

NOTE FOR NOTE: Stephen Sondheim is that rare bird, a visionary artist who’s managed to tack from obsession to musical obsession for the lion’s share of his 80 extraordinary years—and he’s got the awards to prove it (7 Tonys, 7 Grammys, an Oscar and a Pulitzer Prize, to be exact). At the Times center, he talks with the paper’s columnist Frank Rich about his career and his new book Finishing the Hat: Volume One. 6:30PM.

MANGIARE: Head to the Astor Center for Carl Raymond’s hands-on cooking class An Evening in Tuscany: You’ll learn how to make fresh papardelle pasta with wild boar ragú and mushroom sauce. You’ll braise cherries. And through it all you’ll soak up some history of Tuscan cuisine while nibbling on regional cheeses, tasting different olive oils and more. Don’t blame us if this makes you want to turn your Thanksgiving feast Tuscan after this one. 6PM.
