10/20: 4th Annual Firefighter Cookoff, Sloane Crosley & David Rakoff…

…and history behind the bar in What Dickens Drank

HOT PLATES: We could fill these lines with double (hell, maybe even single) entendres about sexy firemen in the kitchen, but we’ll let your brain fill in the blank, Mad Lib-style, about the NYC Fire Museum’s 4th Annual Firefighter Cookoff—think of it as Top Chef meets Backdraft with a dash of Rescue Me. Proceeds benefit an upcoming exhibit on the FDNY’s marine unit. (Heh. Unit.) 6PM.

APPLE PIE: Symphony Space’s Thalia Book Club presents a pair of our favorite essayists, the wryly funny Sloane Crosley (How Did You Get This Number) and David Rakoff (Half Empty)—who are, in part, favorites because they’re as obsessed with New York as we are--interviewed by This American Life’s Ira Glass, having a proper chinwag about life in the city. Could anything be more wonderfully NYC than this? 7:30PM.

WITH A TWIST: The only thing better than cocktails? Historically accurate cocktails. At apexart’s What Dickens Drank antique mixology class, you’ll learn all about what the scribe might have downed back in the mid 19th century—the Sherry-cobbler! The Timber Doodle!--when he visited our fair shores. Finally, some insight into those five-page run-on sentences. Tribeca, 6PM.
