    8. Andy Warhol: Fifteen minutes of fame doesn't apply to this pop artist. Warhol died two decades ago from gall bladder surgery, but his well-known art raked in $9 million last year from merchandise and licensing.

It might be a recession, but Contemporary art buyers were apparently digging deep yesterday, snapping up $28.5 million at Sotheby’s for works by Andy Warhol and Joan Mitchell.

The Contemporary Art Day Sale at Sotheby’s had been expected to net between $27 and $39 million.

“Prices were very strong for established artists such as Robert Indiana, Joan Mitchell, Morris Louis, Andy Warhol and Alexander Calder, but there was also considerable interest in many of the younger artists offered today, including record prices achieved for Shepard Fairey, Jason Rhoades and a sculpture by Dan Colen,” Sotheby’s said.
