Thor's Red Hook Plans Come Into Sharper Focus

Remember Red Hook's Revere Sugar Refinery, which Thor Equities started tearing down nearly two years ago? Well, the property's been clear for a while and it's been a reserve parking lot for Ikea. The Brooklyn Paper got hold of a Thor request for proposals for the property that shows what the future might hold. A BJ’s Wholesale Club has previously been reported, but could be part of a six-level shopping mall with other anchor stores and some residential units. The shopping portion would be 400,000 square feet, which is bigger than the Red Hook Ikea. The only building left standing on the property would be renovated. Zoning changes would be necessary for the development to go forward and there is likely to be local opposition. How Mr. Sitt's ongoing feud with officials about Coney Island redevelopment could impact the Red Hook plan is unknown.
